Abstract

In order to evaluate the plaque-inhibiting effect of a toothpaste containing glucose oxidase and dextranase, the authors had examined the dental plaque accumulation on the buccal and lingual surfaces of teeth of 50 subjects aged twenties, who were brushing teeth with control cosmetic toothpaste and experimental toothpaste containing l0u glucose oxidase and 500u dextranase. The study was designed as a two-period repeated trial during 4 weeks and were performed double blind. Plaque index by Quigley and Hein was used to evaluate the amount of .plaque accumulation at each I week and 2 weeks period. The teeth were professionally cleaned before, each two kinds of period. All the examinee were given with control and experimental toothpastes respectively and straight handled and medium and soft bristled toothbrushes and directed to utilize the toothpastes and toothbrushes offered.
The obtained results were as follows:
1. Plaque index was 1.64 in control group and 1.69 in experimental group at 1 week, and was not significant statistically.
2. Plaque index was 1.64 in control group and 1.75 in experimental group at 2 weeks. It showed ¢¥ statistically significant plaque-inhibiting effect (p < 0.05) of toothbrushing with a toothpaste containing glucose oxidase and dextTanase.
